That first show experience... that launched the next 100

Over the next year I kept practicing the drums and going to concerts. I saw the Screaming Trees and got to hang out with the lead singer, Mark Lanegan, on their tour bus. It wasn’t much fun. It was the middle of the day and he was getting drunk on Jager, and he wasn’t all that friendly. He told me to fuck off after I explained what an honor it would be for him to let me shit in his tour bus toilet. That’s bad juju to deny such a request, which is why you never heard anything else from the Screaming Trees. You should’ve let me bestow you the honor of birthing a dead otter on the tour bus Mark. Now you can’t even find Nearly Lost You in a karaoke catalogue.
On June 16 1995, when I was seventeen, my friends and I piled into the old Honda Accord of one of our mates and headed 200 miles southeast from Radford to Raleigh for our first Phish show. At the time I didn’t really know anything about Phish, as evidenced by the Nine Inch Nails t-shirt I wore to their show. I only knew a few songs off their first album Junta, like Fee and Contact, songs we’d listen to when we got high.
On the way to the concert we got caught in a torrential downpour in Winston-Salem and were involved in a multiple car crash. The fender was bent and there were no injuries, but the crash made us spill our beer all over the car. Once it was determined that our driver was not at fault, and not drinking, the police let us go. At the show two of my friends, Paul and Stephen, got arrested for trying to buy beer with one of those beer wristbands that they found on the ground.
Nonetheless, the atmosphere at a Phish show was like nothing I’d ever seen. The hippies dressed differently, they spoken differently, they ate and drank differently. You had to wear worn-out pants with holes and patches, drink Sammy Smith oatmeal stouts, eat veggie burritos, and call everyone dude, bro, man or a combination of the three, and of course, you had to listen to Phish bootlegs and get high as a motherfucker. This was a full on drug scene, sold openly around the lot. There was an area called Shakedown where people sold food, homemade clothes, glass pipes, tapes of bootlegged shows and drugs. And these people weren’t there for a concert; they were a nomadic community that followed Phish around the country going to show after show for entire tours.
And then there was the music. While I didn’t know much of it, one thing was clear: this was the best musicianship I’d ever seen. These guys were incredible, the keyboardist Page, the guitarist Trey, the bass player, Mike, and the drummer, Fish. I was mesmerized by Fishman, the drummer. He was so good, his technique, his touch, the complexity of his beats, the fierceness of his rolls. If I was a drumming student, I’d found my master. The clincher was when they came out for the encore and lit up Axis: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix.
I was hooked. I went from grunge to hippy, from deodorant to patchouli, from pensive to peace and love. I got all of Phish’s albums, I copied bootlegs from local hippies in Radford, and I morphed fully into a Phish kid, a prototype of a nineties neo-hippy.
