Food for Thoughts: Why Vega and RX5000 series drivers were an issue and why that could be completely opposite with upcoming series?! & Why AMD is still competitive and why they are keeping quiet about Big Navi if they are competitive.
So I had a ShowerTought today, this is all but speculation, but hear me out. I am a normal enthusiast PC guy like anyone else, know some bits and have some understanding, but not really technical gritty bits, so please chip inn guys I really want to hear other perspectives about what I will discuss.
First of all I start from the end, people already gave up on Big Navi, but in my opinion that is just nvidia marketing with the 2x time 2080 performance going strong there. While the 3080 never reached close to that potential, but because of nvidia hype, people gave up totally on AMD with them remaining silent to taunts and behaving not business like and not promoting or hyping on their own product if it's anywhere close to competition. I mean if AMD had something competitive they would want people to wait for them by promoting their product, right? I think why AMD could have to keep quiet about really is because they have some NDA agreements with Sony and Microsoft which forces them to do keep quiet about RDNA2/Big Navi or feature set in general.
Now about the elephant in the room, the driver issue with Vega and RX5000/Small Navi/RDNA drivers. I came with realization, that the main reason why AMD had issues with Vega and RDNA drivers was in my opinion mainly because drivers no longer could scale well with optimization coming from console side of things. AS beforehand with GCN architecture AMD was getting direct feedback from console that was helpful to improve their drivers for PC graphic card also running on newer, modified but still GCN arch. But then VEGA and later on RDNA is just that much different than GCN architecture, making it difficult to scale optimization gained from consoles to the newer cards on newer architecture. With RDNA2 being both in consoles and a product for PC consumers, all that could well change! It could all go back to stellagood drivers from R 200, R 300, RX 400 and RX 500 series where it was all run on GCN architecture, likewise it will now. AMD was especially competitive performance and drivers with R200 and R300 series vs GTX700 series when PS4 and X1 first came out and their drivers were then good (when even compared to nvidia) through whole GCN architecture. This is a repeat of just that, RDNA2 is again 1 to 1 hardware that we will have in PC and consoles, which will give AMD first hand access to Developers and nvidia games. Giving AMD easy way to scale optimization to their drivers in PC and also give out good Game Ready drivers like nvidia does.
This last point is RayTracing support and DLSS competing solution. We know for certain already that AMD will have hardware accelerated Ray Tracing at this point, it all depends on performance. They will also have now fully capable DX12 Ultimate feature set, so that's also nice. The last point is DLSS solution, which looks unlikely at release, but never say never, with support from Sony and Microsoft miracles happen. It's a great solution, it's the future, here to stay, basically free performance and can even possibly be better quality than true resolution. Thankfully AMD and Microsoft got their own SuperComputers and lot money on their hand to implement it in the future. DLSS being such a magic tech. it must be on their priority list, they got money, they got the SuperComputers capable like nvidia they will get it done for sure. Last point would be Broadcast solution, that can be done too, probably both Sony and Microsoft would also want that on their consoles, that would probably would have lower priority in their que over RayTracing and DLSS at first. Still that also relies on SuperComputer and they got as powerful SuperComputer as nvidia, it will most probably come in time. This all sounds like PR talk from me here now that I think about, but it's all lies on real of being possible and not really even optimistic. I just cannot see why not all this being the case, I actually think people are underplaying AMD this time around because AMD did fail last couple times. But I like to look at things in perspective and non of those features are beyond AMD capability to implement, just may take some time.
With 3080 being out of stock anyway and having to wait until don't know when, before that probably x70 models come out so I think I will be giving AMD a chance after long while. I sold my 2080 before launch, sitting here on 770, so I am just waiting for to see who can get my money :) To be fair already Pre-Ordered a PS5 for 545 Euro, so AMD gets my money anyway :)
