Hope it's okay to ask this here.
I have a Surface Book 3, and when I use Adobe Photoshop CC (Pro/Paid), my Surface gets hot and the Windows 10 ui freezes!
Now, the hot thing can't be helped. I tried to run a 6000px x 6000px 300DPI canvas (freezing also happens on 3000x3000). But shortly after painting for a bit, I can no longer open the digital keyboard, open the start menu, cannot navigate file explorer, select programs in the taskbar, or anything like that.
Funny enough, I can still do gesture swipes and they work fine.
As soon as I close Photoshop, the UI becomes responsive again. Sometimes things like task manager stays unresponsive, but if I detach the screen, everythigg becomes 100% responsive again (making me believe this may be related to the graphics card). Here is what I have tried to do to resolve it
- Updated Windows 10 to its newest version (2004 + 2020-08 Quality updates)
- Downloaded the newest Nvidia Studio drivers (used game ready before - same result)
- Downloaded the latest Intel Drivers.
- Run the Surface Diagnostic tool ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4038417/surface-try-the-diagnostic-tool
- Installed the latest Surface Drivers.
- Reinstalled Adobe Photoshop.
- Given Windows 32GB of Virtual Memory pr. this guide
- Optimized Photoshop pr. this guide
- Set Adobe Photoshop preferred powermanagement to Maximum Performance pr. this video
- Installed Iolo System Mechanic
All in all, updates and optimizations the whole way around, w.o. luck unfortunately.
It seems it happens more often if the machines get hot, but no hard data on that.
It's not related to the computers temperature. Just tested again, and drawing for 2min while the machine is ice cold causes the freezing to happen.
Any ideas on how to use Photoshop on SB3 w.o. having Windows 10 freeze? I really want to use my creative machine for creative things :P
System Info It's the 15' 16GB RAM 256GB SSD version
This freezing does not happen when the screen is detached from the base. Of course performance is worse, but now the UI does not freeze.
_____________________________________________________ UPDATE 2:
If the screen is attached to base, the freezing still occurs irregardles of telling photoshop not to use graphics processors, and even setting photoshop to use the integrated graphics (intel) in the Nvidia Control Panel under 3D settings.
So the problem seems to be unique for Surface Books (no. 3 at least), and be active when base and screen is connected.
It seems unrelated to the graphic cards (both Intel an Nvidia).
_____________________________________________________ UPDATE 3:
I found the cause of the freeze; it is not SB3, Photoshop, Windows 10, or Nvidia. It's the Wacom Expresskey Remote
, when used in a specific way.
I wanted to be able to change Photoshop brushes' size/hardness via the drag function in photoshop
, so I configured my Expresskey remote as you can see in below screenshot
This worked, and I can resize my brush by dragging. But as soon I have used this shortcut once, the Windows UI freezes. No other usage of the Expresskey remote causes a freeze - only this shortcut where two keys are used at the same time (as far as I have experienced)
Thanks to all that have replied in this thread. I'll issue a bug report to Wacom.
... mini update 4
BTW I just figured out you can simply program the Expresskey Remote to have alt+right click enabled on ONE key, instead of splitting them on two. This is both easier to use, and does not trigger the bug. Guess you can say this is an error 40... But I still hope this thread can help anybody who encounters this.
