The summary of ''Psychic Awakening : Pariah''

Introduction :

-Humanity was not the only race affected by coming of the Great Rift. Every race in the galaxy felt the spread of its influence. Dragging each into anarchy and mayhem. Orks launched Waaagh! after Waaagh! as their worlds were engulfed by Warpstorms and their shamans are stricken with visions of bellowing gods and galactic conquest . The factions of the Aeldari either sought to harness the swelling warp power to push back the foul servants of Chaos, or preyed upon the isolated and beset peoples of the galaxy. Everywhere alien empires rose and fell, as the forces of the Dark Gods fought their way to supremacy in a reality that teetered on the brink of ultimate devastation.

-Into this galactic scale mayhem, humanity launched the Indomitus Crusade. Its battle groups pushed back the darkness and reinforced crumbling defences of Man. Yet they were not alone in seeking to restore order. Deep within the Nephilim sub-sector, the Necrons began their response to the rising menace of Chaos. A plan so grand and merciless, only the Necrons could have concocted it.

Chapter 1 :

-Indomitus Crusade Primus was largest and most powerful of the initial Crusade fleet. Comprised of full twenty six battle groups and led by the Primarch and Belisarius Cawl, the fleet had the power to shake the stars. Such an immense gathering of men and resources was not a consequence of any vanity on the part of Guilliman nor was it a gross miscalculation, for the mission set before this fleet was nothing less than securing of the entire of the Imperium Sanctus.

-Though much of Fleet Primus' initial efforts were centred in Segmentum Solar to combat the many threats on Terra's very doorstep, this was not true for all the fleet's battlegroups. Some of the battlegroup were sent out deeper into the Imperium Sanctus on vital missions. For example, Battle Group Erastus were tasked with crushing heretic cults before they unleash legions of daemons in the galactic north of Terra. Battlegroup Noctus raced towards Armageddon on a secret mission known only to its commanders. Then there was Battlegroup Kallides. Charged with investigating the haunted and silent Nephilim sub-sector. Theirs would be a stranger road.

-As the darkness of the Noctis Aeterna lifted, distress signals flooded in from the countless worlds of the Imperium. However, from the Nephilim sub-sector there was nothing but silence. The absence of the screams and lamentations was deemed deeply sinister by the battlegroup command and it further fuelled their determination to uncover the truth of the sub-sector. At best, it's a region where the Noctis Aeterna persisted. At worst, all Imperial presence had been eradicated. Either way, it must be dealt with.

-The commander of the Battlegroup Kallides was Groupmaster Marran. An old iron willed and unsubtle admiral of the Imperial Navy. His council was formed from mighty heroes of the Imperium that included lords of the Ultramarines and the Black Templar chapters, the Deathwatch, nobles of the Knightly Houses, Titan princeps, and Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus of the Ordo Xenos.

-As Battlegroup Kallides cut a bloody path towards Nephilim, Sister Stern known by some as the "rhe Daemonifuge" was led to the Zone of Silence by grim visions of a cold silent doom. A doom that her Aeldari comrade Kyganil was even now gathering new allies against. Upon the world of Severitas, Stern joined forces with an isolated force of Battle Sisters. Though, the many sisters were initially hesitant to trust someone branded as a heretic by the Inquisition, Stern's display of holy might burned away their doubts. With the miraculous power of Stern on their side, the Sisters utterly crushed their Word Bearers foes. As the Sisters departed to join with the approaching Battlegroup Kallides, Stern went with them seeing the Crusade for the holy endeavour it was and also to seek allies for her cause. Yet as the Battlegroup drew closer to the zone her disquiet grew greater. Kyganil had not yet returned and her grim visions became more vivid.

-Arriving to the systems bordering the Nephilim sub-sector, the battlegroup found found panic and mayhem on a disturbing scale. Imperial worlds in open revolts not to throw off the tyranny of the Imperium nor the worship of the Chaos Gods, but to simply flee their worlds en mass by whatever means possible. In several systems, wars raged against aliens who fought with intensity not to conquer the worlds of the Imperium but to escape further away from the sub-sector. The battlegroup diverted some of its forces to secure these systems and continued on forward toward the Zone of Silence.

-Seers filled the vox channels with warnings of a smothering veil that turned the stars dark, but the crusaders steeled their hearts with courage and plunged into the Zone of Silence. Their nightmare began in earnest.

The Pariah Nexus :

To the Imperial forces trying to pierce the veil of silence, the region would come to be called the Pariah Nexus. To its Necron architects, it was the Contra-immaterian Nodal Matrix. It was a work of unparalleled cosmic engineering. In the heart of the Nexus lay the Xendu system, its vast raging star was contained within a cage of Blackstone. Anchored by beams of energy, myriad Necron structures hung around the cyclopean cage. Flights of Necron tomb ships surrounded the cage and its structures, watching over their immense charge.

Further out vast Blackstone Pylons were scattered through nodal and outlier systems. Each pylon was a unique and remarkable structure and all of them were deployed in non-Euclidean patterns that would have driven the greatest mortal minds mad. Their purpose was to sustain and extend a field of negatively charged anti-empyric energies resulting in the horrific phenomenon that the Imperials came to know as the Stilling.

Chapter 2 :

-No letting the logic or superstition of his underlings impede his course, Groupmaster Marran ordered his fleet forward through the misty psychic veil that stood between them and the Zone of Silence. What laid beyond the Warp mists was a deathly calm. Some of the battlegroup's psykers claimed that Warp was still as a pond while others claimed that they can see that the Warp still raged but it was trapped impotently behind walls of a fractionally complex crystal dome.

-As the battle group forces spread out to the Zone's systems a deep sense of disquiet fell on them. The battle group's psykers felt weakened and disoriented. They struggled to grasp powers that came previously as naturally as thought. The Warp engines required more and more energy to function. Some of the battle group's ships had their Gellar fields burst yet their panicked crews were surprised that no daemons came to prey upon them.

-In a sluggish pace, the battle group arrived to their target systems. They were met with more silence. No communication can be heard from the planets and there was no signs of human life. Worse still, strange signatures of powerful pulsing energy emanated from multiple Imperial worlds. Their nature could not be discerned.

-The mystery became stranger and more horrible as ground forces landed. The malaise that affected the troops ever since arriving to the Zone intensified especially among the Imperial Guard. The soldiers either were overcome with despair or surrendered to lethargy that left them collapsed on the ground unresponsive and unwilling to move.

-The Space Marines, Imperial Knights, and Admech were not unscathed by the effects of the Stilling though they resisted it better. Only the Sisters of Battle seemed to be largely immune.

-Of all the affected, the psykers suffered the worst. They described their suffering as akin to drowning. Gasping painfully for air that would never come. Some went mad. Others took their lives. Soon the number of the Battle group's Navigators and Astropaths became dangerously low forcing command to assign the surviving psykers with watchful bodyguards to protect them from themselves as much as any external threat.

-The conditions of the worlds did not help the morale of the ground forces. They were silent and devoid of life. Though, there were signs of battle, they were few and faint. It was as if billions of the Emperor's servants simply vanished with barely a trace.

-Watching the Imperials explore the desolate worlds, was Szeras and his minions. Lurking back in his web, Szeras bid his time and held back his forces. Deciding to observe the humans before unleashing his forces. This would prove to be a mistake.

-On the world of the Mesmoch in the Zeidos system, Ultramarines found an immense Pylon that stretched upwards to the planet's troposphere. They identified the structures at its base as belonging to the Necrons. The Ultramarines deduced that this was the reason behind the battlegroup's suffering. Following Szeras commands, the defenders of the Pylon did not strike at the Ultramarines and allowed them to escape. By the time Szeras released this it was already too late. The Mesmoch Pylon was the first to be discovered but it won't be the last. Soon the Imperials will come for them all. Szeras hands were forced and the Necron legions were loosed on the Imperials.

-From across the Zone of Silence systems, reports of Necron army movements and attacks came in. Losses were mounting at an alarming rate yet Marran had a target at last and would not be distracted.

The assault upon Mesmoch went poorly from the start. Warp drive failures and stilled crews resulted in only two thirds of the requested Imperial ships to arrive. This incomplete force met formations of Necron tombships and the fire of the Mesmoch's orbital defences. By the time the Imperials fought their way to the worlds orbit to deliver their forces, they lost many of their ships.

-The Ultramarines and Black Templar led the attack alongside several Deathwatch kill teams. they established the beachheads that allowed six regiments of Imperial Guard and a warlord titan to make planetfall.

-As the Necron phalanxes clashed with the Imperial forces, an Apocalypse-class battleship bullied its way through the foe to rain the fire of its nova cannon and lance batteries on the Pylon. The Imperials below cheered as the pylon disappeared behind a curtain of fire and smoke. However, when the air cleared the Pylon stood undamaged.

-Ground assault was the only option to topple the Pylon yet it was increasingly difficult. The Space marines fought hard to reach the pylon managing to be half a mile away from it, yet their Imperial Guard allies faltered and collapsed before the effects of the Pylons.

-The Necrons exploited the weakness of their enemies to unleash a wave of war engines. The Monoliths and Doomsday Barges laid waste to the overmatched Imperial forces. Blasting back their tanks and reducing many marines to glowing ash. Even the mighty warlord was sent reeling as its void shield collapsed and it was forced to endure the eldritch fire of the Necrons weapons.

-The Imperials were defeated but the might and discipline of the Space Marines prevented it from being rout. staging a fighting retreat in which they fought as the rearguard, the Space Marines covered the Imperial forces as they limped back to their extraction zones. Two Deathwatch Kill Teams entered the annuals of glory as they fought to the last battle brother to hold back the Necrons. The Black Templar led a heroic counter-attack that repulsed the Necrons forces that sought to finish off the Warlord Titan.

-The crippled and devastated Imperial forces made it to their landing craft and blazed upward. They escaped with their lives but they had suffered a crushing humiliating defeat. A defeat that the battle group cannot afford to repeat.

Chapter 3 :

Following the wake of the Mesmoch disaster, efforts to contact reserve forces or recall the task forces in the systems beyond the psychic veil proved fruitless. Imperials suffered further defeats as the numbers of Necrons doubled and then redoubled. Such a disperse gathering of Necron dynasties was never witnessed before.

-It was at this time that the term Pariah Nexus as coined for the region. The effects of the Stilling were too similar to those caused by the soulless mutants known as Pariahs.

-Coming before the Groupmaster Marran, Sister Stern requested a chance to restore Imperial spirits by leading a counter attack on the Necrons. She would not attack the heavily defended Pylon worlds but a world that acted as a transportation hub for the Necrons. The world was called Cherist and contained three Dolmen Gates. It was still heavily defended but if it could be conquered then the flow of the Necron legions to the warzones would be choked off with one stroke.

-Marran, seeing the merit of this plan and having heard of the Sisters' resistance to the effects of the Pariah Nexus, approved. It was a gamble for both of them. The offensive would the largest since Mesmoch. If it failed then Battlegroup Kallides would be effectively finished. Cherist is located in the far south of the battle group's operations. This means thanks to the calmness of the Warp, the offensive would be far beyond the aid of any of the battle group's remaining forces. Stern had to succeeded or die trying. There as no other option.

-Arriving to the Icy world of the Cherist, the Imperials sent down two invasion cathedrums that were accompanied by the landing keeps of the Imperial Knights. The descending cathedrums directed their fire to the mountainside starting a crushing avalanche of ice and rock that swept down on the Necron complex. turning the unshielded Necron structures to ruin and half burying the others.

-The alerted by this spectacular opening move, the Necrons defences opened fire on the Imperial landing craft. Ranks of warriors and war engines spilled forth from the tomb structures like insects emerging from a disturbed hive.

-As the Imperial Knights smashed the outlying fire bases of the Necrons, Stern led thousands of sisters toward the den of battle. As they marched forward they filled the air with their war hymns. The Imperial Guard forces that came alongside them took heart in the Sisters displays of faith. They believed that with these holy warriors of the Emperor at their head this is a fight that they could win.

-The Necron Shemvokh bristled with rage at the insolence of these mortals. They had dared to defile his holdings and attack their betters. For this affront he would see to them pay. Gathering his lychguard around him and mounting his Command Barge, the Phaeron led his legions in person to meet the assault.

-The full wrath of the Necrons descended on the Imperials. The phalanxes of the Necrons butchered their Imperial foes by the score. At the battle's heart the Phaeron vented his fury, leading his elite Lychguard into an attack meant to cleave the mortals' battleline into two.

-Stern watched this all and prayed for the Emperor for deliverance. She had her own reasons for coming to this planet where the Webway was trammelled. Her visions led her here and they must come to pass. Kyganil would bring the might of Ynnari out the Webway at a crucial moment. For a moment, as the Dolmen Gates activated, she thought that everything was aligning as she had foreseen. Yet to her horror, no Ynnari emerged from the Gates. It was Necron reinforcements that marched through them.

-In a flash, Kyganil appeared at her side but he came with ill tidings. He spoke about the Ynnari's battle with the daemon huntress Shalaxi Hellbane. How the sweet taste of victory turned to ash in their mouths. How it shattered the Aeldari alliance. Even if the Ynnari wished to aid Stern, they could not. Yvraine told Kyganil that in this day she could not aid Stern.

-Stern in the presence of her alien comrade, she bit back a curse to all xenos and then looked around the battlefield seeing courageous human warriors fighting and dying with prayers and praises to HIM on their lips. She realised that she and her fellow warriors didn't need Xenos help. They had faith and it's all they need to win.

-At this moment, a group of sisters of battle succeed in detonating one of the Dolmen Gates. Taking inspiration from their heroism, Sister Stern marshalled her full power and rose into the air carried by wings made from lightning and fire. Where her light burned, the Stilling receded. Filled with holy fervour, the Imperials drove into the Necrons with flashing blades and battle carries on their lips.

-The Phaeron was not concerned by this display of power. After all, the strange technology of the Crypteks was meant to counter such manifestation. He could not know that this was not Warp-spawned power. It was holy faith, a manifested miracle. By her power, Stern sent the second Dolmen Gate toppling down in flames.

-The Phaeron ordered his legions to redouble their attack but he was amazed when the beset Imperial forces pressed back and surged forth to overrun the Necrons. In their aid, charged the Imperial Knights hitting both flanks of the Necrons.

-As this was happening, Stern and Kyganil descended on the Phaeron and his lychguard. The Necron elite had the skills of aeons on their side yet they were no match for the duo of Stern and Kyganil. One by one, fell the lychguard before their Phaeron was blasted into ruin by holy lightning.

-With the fall of the Phaeron, the Necrons were doomed to defeat. As the final Dolmen Gate was smashed to ruin, it became clear that faith was a weapon that the Imperium can use to counter the effects of the Stilling. The Battle group might yet prevail!

Chapter 4 :

-Szeras was intrigued by the humans resistance to the effects of the Contra-Immaterean Nodal Matrix . He had dissected specimens gathered from a myriad of battlefields hoping to understand the psychic discipline used by the humans. The primitives nonsensical claims of it being miracles and faith were dismissed. After all, the Necrons met their gods and shattered them. How can the deities of the lesser races have the power to resist the Necrons when the C'tan failed?

-Exploiting their new discovery, the Imperials assigned preachers, Battle Sisters, and Black Templar to stoke the fires of faith in the Imperial soldiery. This saw the battle group emerge resurgent in their conflicts with the Necrons. Thanks to the power of faith, messenger ships managed escape the Pariah Nexus and return with fresh reinforcements. Despite all these gains, faith only lessened the effects of the Stilling, not halt it. The Imperials had not managed to damage a single Pylon.

-Realising that he Imperials needed knowledge, Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus began formulating a plan which began by sending a scouting mission of Tempestus Scions to the Tredica system deep within the Pariah Nexus. Only one squad survived to report back. The barely coherent scions provided the inquisitors with a wealth of reconnaissance. It was revealed that the system's worlds were dragged from their alignment to hang around an immense black artefact in the void.

-The next step was for her to go personally to Tredica to plunder the secrets needed to understand the Pylons and defeat them. Draxus hand picked an expedition comprised of Sisters of Battle, Black Templar, Scions, the Deathwatch, and a conclave of tech-magi from the Forgeworld of Stygies VIII.

-Yet Draxus wasn't the only one weaving plans. The Scions that had escaped Tredica were captured by Szeras, implanted with mindshackle scarabs, and then set free. He reasoned that the human champions drawn by the information gathered by the scions would be excellent subjects for interrogation. The knowledge extracted from them would hold the key to exterminating the humans once and for all.

-In his arrogance, Szeras erred. Draxus had seen the effects of the mindshackle scarabs before and recognised the trap. She would not only go to Tredica with her eyes open but would also bring an asset that the Necrons couldn't account for. Sister Stern

-The inquisitors forces split into three groups. The Black Templar and a combined force of Scions and Sisters led diversionary attacks to the two lesser worlds of the Tredica system drawing the Necron fleets away as the Inquisitor's own forces made their way to the largest planet.

-The Inquisitor's ship used shields based on the technology of the Aeldari halo-shields to slip past the guns of the Necron orbitals. Though, Draxus expected that that they were allowed to proceed unimpeded. Regardless, she was prepared.

-After landing on the planet, the Imperials exited the gunships aboard their armoured personal carriers. The moment the gunships dusted off, Szeras sprung his trap. A flight of Necron flyers chased away the Imperial gunships and delivered an elite force of Necrons that encircled the Imperials.

-Szeras stepped forth and delivered a (very very hammy) monologue before demanding that they surrender. Rather than recoiling in shock and terror as he had expected, the humans drove through the Necron elites.

-The Necron elites reacted quickly and disabled many of the Imperial transports. Yet the Imperial continued to race on toward the Necron portal. The tech-magi rushed to suborn the machine spirit of the Necron portal. Deathwatch and battle sisters covered them as they worked.

-Szeras hissed for reinforcements and fought his way towards the portal with his elites. Yet he was too late. The portal flared and the humans disappeared. Delayed charges demolished the portal halting any pursuit. Witnessing this, Szeras' mental state escalated from irritation to pure rage.

-Draxus sought the mnemetic crystals. They are devices that acted as repositories of Necron knowledge. With enough resources and time, her Xenarite allies could plunder them for information.

-Guided by the Emperor, Stern led the Imperial forces through the maze-like confines of the Necron tomb. Fighting against Cenoptek constructs and Warrior patrols every step of the way until they came upon the sight of a towering humanoid figure made from living flame who writhed in torment within a Necron machine.

-Before the Imperials can guess the purpose of the C'tan machine, Szeras and his forces emerged from the shadows. Alerted by her Xenarite allies, Draxus spotted the mnemetic crystals. They were bound to the C'tan machine. Amidst the fighting, Inquisitor and her tech-magi allies laboured to extract them.

-The forces that Szeras brought to bear on the Imperials were overwhelming. No amount of heroism could prevent the coming massacre, yet Stern led her Imperial last stand fighting back to back with her alien comrade.

-It was at this moment that Draxus extracted the final crystal, an effort that had slain four tech-magi. However, seeing that the Imperial forces were reduced to the tenth of their starting size with Necron forces closing on all sides, she knew that a fighting retreat was not an option. Escape was impossible.

-Assessing the few options that remained for her. She turned toward the C'tan machine and used her power fist to smash it to ruin. The C'tan burst free from the machine and exacted its vengeance on those who had imprisoned. However, even with the C'tan rampage distracting the Necrons, the Imperials' chances were slim. But then Draxus felt her flesh crawl as C'tan shard stared at her.

-The C'tan pointed at her direction and she braced for death but when she opened her eyes she had found that herself and the surviving Imperials were transported out of the Necron tomb back to her ship in orbit.

-For whatever unknown reason, the C'tan shard had chosen to save the Inquisitor's and her comrades lives. She vowed that she would consider the implication of what just happened but before that she would escape back to Imperial lines and uncover the secrets hidden within her prize.

Epilogue :

Lord Inquistor Draxus and her tech-magi allies reviewed the findings from the mnemetic crystals. The Pariah Nexus within the Nephilim sector was not unique. It was one among many. There was another in the Eastern Fringes. Another far to the galactic north of Naogeddon. And more still. They were positioned in the galactic fringes to form a ring around the galaxy.

But what shocked and disturbed her the most was the mention of Szarekh. Things were worse than she feared. The Silent King had returned!

Interesting plot hooks :

-A Warpstorm disgorged hundreds possible thousands of the Tyranids bio-ships in the Sol Sector.

-Castellan Crowe is set on a mission to go to Planet of Sorcerers and rescue the Grey knights left behind on the evnts of "Ritual of the Damned".

-It seems that Admech ships encountered ships belonging to something they fought extinct. No matter how heretical, truth can't be denied. Those ships belong to the Squa....

Is it a red herring like the whole Necron Pariahs and Pariah Nexus thing or is it a legit hint of GW bringing the little guys back? We shall see.

-Expect something relating to Abaddon in the future

And we are done. Congratulation guys. We made it. 8th ED is officially over. See you in 9th ED. Here is official credit roll theme :
