Electrical & Computer FE Exam 2020: My experience and how I passed

Hello all! I am a firm believer in helping out whenever you can and I would like to offer my own tips for passing the EECE exam, more specifically the most recent one that is out. Obviously this isn't a reveal of any information on the test, its just meant to be some encouragement and ideas for your studying!
My situation was that I am 6 months out of college and did not know if this would be the path I would want to take, up until recently. That is why I waited until now. If you are able to take it during college, do it! If not, it is still possible but will get harder as time goes by so don't put it off. I rushed it, and I don't recommend it. I signed up for a test only 2 months away and didn't start studying until the month before. I did nothing but work and study for that month.
  1. Truly any engineer can pass this, you just need to identify your strengths and weaknesses. I was never exceptional in college and have always been average to below average on exams. Look through the provided list of topics and identify what you think you know well, kinda remember, and have never seen before. Like most people, not everything on the test was covered in my curriculum.
  2. Start doing some self-teaching before diving into practice problems. I spent about 2 weeks going though topic by topic, learning the basics of each. I went through hundreds of YouTube videos and tutorials. Kahn Academy, The Organic Chemistry Tutor, and Gregory Michaelson all have excellent videos on this subject matter.
  3. Get your calculator before you start practicing problems. You need to know how to use it quickly. I see a lot of people recommending you get the fanciest one on the approved list, but I got the cheap one and did just fine. The Casio does have more features: matrix math, vector math, and complex number math. However, if you know the math behind each then you will do fine with a simple calculator.
  4. Start using your FE handbook. You should have a general idea of how this thing is laid out before exam day. Practice pulling key words from the problems and searching for them in the handbook. There is a lot of great and necessary information in that booklet. Aside from maybe some super basic stuff, they won't expect you to use an equation that is not in the book. You'll see this in the NCEES practice booklet.
  5. Start doing practice problems. I bought the NCEES and Lindeburg practice exams. Don't pay full price if you don't have to. Check out eBay and Mercari for used ones. I preached this method all throughout college for those paying their own way through. You can buy textbooks used for dirt cheap online, and then re-sell them online when you're done to recover some funds. I just posted my used books on Mercari.
  6. The NCEES is the best in terms of knowing what types of questions will be on the test. They are not trying to trick you into studying for the wrong things, it is a necessary study tool. Take it a couple times until you're comfortable with the problems.
  7. The Lindeburg has similar types of questions, but it is a little outdated. There are sections on there that do not match the list of materials, so don't bother studying those. If its not on the NCEES list, its not on the test. Most of the problems are much harder than what will be on the test, so don't be discouraged if you cannot rip through them. Use the solutions to learn and study from it.
  8. Don't forget that it is both electrical and computer. Im an EE that minored in embedded systems which gave a huge leg-up on the computer section of the test. You need to know your software material. Spend extra time on things like digital systems, embedded systems, and pseudo code if you did not do much of it in college.
  9. My Achilles heal was power systems and motors because that was never covered in my curriculum. I had to start fresh with that and it was very time consuming. There are some things you can skip over if you do not have time to learn it from scratch (learning from scratch is difficult for this test), but you can only do that for so many problems. Really try to at least have a basic concept of each topic and understand what the provided equations mean.
  10. Do not freak out about the time limit. You will have sections where you fly through and gain extra time for harder sections. I am not sure if each problem is meant to be solved in under 3 minutes or not, but sometimes there is a short way and a long way to solve something. The long way is okay to do as long as you are confident in your answer. I didn't run out of time or feel pressured at any moment.
  11. Don't do any practice problems the couple of days leading up to the exam day. Trust me once you are at the end of your studying, you'll contemplate changing careers if it means never doing an FE exam problem again. Leave time to rest a little. Have you ever lifted constantly for a month and saw no improvement, then took a week off and suddenly became unstoppable? Do that with your studying. Light review doesn't hurt.
  12. Spend your last day mapping out the drive to your test center 80 times and quadruple-checking your approved items list. Set an alarm on two different devices. Bring two forms of ID to be extra safe. Get there early. Do whatever you need to do to boost confidence. Guess on questions you don't know and flag them for later review. Don't let a streak of guessed questions bog you down, it happens. Just keep going and do your best. If you don't pass, see what sections you did the worst on and use that to prepare for your retake. Don't let time pass between tests, you are only making it harder for yourself.
Good luck all! This is open for additional questions, thank you.
