Essential Software for Windows 10

This is a list of software I found useful. This list is designed around Windows 10; many of these should work with older Windows, Linux distros, and Mac.
This is a list of software I've personally tried and tested, there may be better ones out there so keep your calm when your favorite software isn't featured. Suggestions are always welcomed.
This is my last post on /software, form now on I'll maintain a repo to keep this list updated. Message to people who add "reddit" to their google search: this is my most up-to-date list.
Finally, the first software in each category is the best according to me. Rest are in no particular order.

Text Editor

• Visual Studio Code: Fast and equipped with a lot of useful features by default, VS Code is arguably the best text editor-IDE hybrid. Features a live edit.
• Atom: With a massive library of extensions, Atom is probably the text editor with most features. However, this is a double-edged sword, it feels sluggish in comparison to other popular text editors. Features live edit.
• Sublime Text: While Sublime Text may not have the most extensive extension library, it is lightning fast. Although Sublime is a paid software, it is WinRAR kind of paid.
• Notepad++: If you aren't going to code on your text editor, but still want something a little more advanced than the default notepad, this is the text editor for you.

Office Tools

• Google Docs: When I say Docs, I mean the entire office ecosystem offered by Google. If you're working in a professional setup, your peers may not have the exact same office software. Google Docs gives ability to create and edit from any device. Plus live edit is a Godsent.
• Microsoft Office Online: Microsoft finally launched its own free, online office suite. If you're not satisfied with Google's office ecosystem, this is a very good alternative. However, it might be a challenge to convince your peers to switch from the tried and tested Google Docs.
• Microsoft Office: Microsoft offers two variants of Office: 365 (MS Office as a service/monthly payments and regular updates) and 2019 (one time payment/only security patches and minor updates). Decide what suits your needs and budget. While there are free alternatives to MS Office, there is a very good reason MS Office still holds the majority market share in office utility software.
• Libre Office: Open source goodness. A decent free alternative to MS Office.
• Open Office: Although Libre Office has arguably dethroned Open Office as the best free office software, it is still a very good software.

Raster Graphics EditoPhoto Editor

• Adobe Photoshop: Honestly, it is just too good. An industry standard for decades, Photoshop has the most extensive tutorials which also makes it easiest to learn despite being on the complex side of photo editors. Adobe Lightroom is a lightweight version of Photoshop, give it a try if you find Photoshop too complex. All Adobe softwares have a 14-day trial.
• GIMP: It features virtually all the tools majority of non-professional will ever need from a photo editor.
• PicMonkey (online): It isn't very powerful, but if you just need some color correction, this is a decent tool. Breaking the purpose of this list for a minute, Snapseed is a powerful touchup tool for Android and iOS.
• Affinity Photo: While there are more than a dozen of paid photo editors, I found Affinity Photo to be the fastest.

Vector Graphics Editor

• Adobe Illustrator: I constantly try different vector editors, but I always come back to Illustrator because it is just that good.
• Inkscape: Nothing beats the price of free. Still waiting for v1.0, it is being improved constantly.
• Affinity Design: Again, there are many paid vector editors, I found this one to be the fastest. As of v1.5, I really miss image trace and align to key object in this software. Having said that, I feel it has better guideline assistance than Illustrator which is the reason I switched to it.

Video Player

• Pot Player: Clean and modern interface and supports virtually all formats.
• Media Player Classic: It goes for a classic (Win XP era) look. Great performance, you'll have no complaints.

Audio Player

• Music Bee: A highly customizable interface, lots of EQ options, amazing online integration (fetches cover art, lyrics, etc), and all around a complete package.
• AIMP: Lots of features and customization under the hood. I use AIMP because it displays metadata on top of the screen when a new song plays.
• Foobar 2000: You can spend an afternoon customizing every pixel of this music player to your liking. Pretty simple, nothing fancy, gets the job done.
• Metalogger: This is not an audio player, it is a audio file metadata editor. While there are many metadata editors out there, I found Metalogger to have the cleanest interface and a lot of powerful scripts which automate your work.

Torrent Client

• qBitTorrent: Simple and straight forward. Isn't the best looking torrent client, but I can't complain considering the clean and ad-free interface.
• Vuze: First of all, features a virtually identical ad-supported free version, so don't skip this without consideration. Features robust built-in torrent search and remote control via mobile app.
• uTorrent: While it is true uTorrent has gone to sh*t recently, uTorrent 2.2.1 is arguably the best lightweight torrent client which still gets the job done. I highly discourage downloading the latest version of uTorrent. I've provided a link to v2.2.1
• Xtreme Download Manager: Although it is not a torrent client, it is an extremely useful software. I was always skeptical of the download managers, but one faithful day I gave it a try and to my surprise, it actually did boost the download speed. Features an option to resume downloads (provided the server also does), and download YouTube audio/video as well. If you're concerned about your privacy, don't install the Chrome/Firefox extension and stick to using the "+" to add URLs to download.

Misc (best of class)

List of all software which are niche to have their own category.

• ueli: Press Alt+Space to launch a search. I've uninstalled my dock, removed icons on home screen, and removed shortcuts on my taskbar thanks to ueli. Access calculator, folders, applications, Google (and other search engines), websites, and command prompt by a few keystrokes.
• f.lux: Reduces blue light from your desktop to help reduce eye-strain. Although Microsoft has added a blue light filter in Win 10, it is pretty barebone. f.lux gives you complete control over its behavior.
• PeaZip: A modern file compression tool. Features 7z, RAR, and ZIP among various other compression algorithms no-one uses.

Dell vostro 430 Windows 7 ultimate 64bit (6.1, build 7600)
Basically around 6 months ago my pc started displaying this error, I started using my laptop instead but I have realised I would much rather use my desktop and figured I should try do something about the error messages that are preventing me from doing anything on it!
Every start up the machine is displaying "the program can't start because WS2_32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem" When I click ok to remove the alert, the exact same message pops up but this time in the header bar it has a different program name ie. iTunes, Skype, utorrent etc etc
I was told to do a clean boot by some other tech helpers which I have done, when I started the computer in clean boot mode I tried running some of the programs that are causing the ws2_32.dll error and they still come up with the error. I was also told to run sfc / scannow but that didn't appear to do anything?
Hopefully someone out there can help me, I am quite happy to wipe the pc as I have now found the installation disc and activation key. I guess I'd just like to try every option before that, plus the one thing I don't have is the disc or the product key for microsoft office suite?
